Is Training in Substance Abuse the Right Career for You?

Are you wondering if training in substance abuse will lead you to the right career? You may have questions or wonder if you are the right type of person to offer drug and alcohol counseling. The first step is to learn more about what a career in this field entails.

  • The first step is to obtain a bachelor's degree.

  • You may also go on to receive your master's degree.

  • Some students complete a certificate program. These programs have specific requirements as to previous schooling. Certificate programs are designed to meet the requirements of your state.

Once you have completed your studies, you will begin work. You will have to work under a licensed counselor. Once this is completed, you are ready to go out on your own. Some students begin their own private practice, while others work within hospitals and rehabilitation centers.

In addition to your schooling and training, you will need some special skills in order to be successful.

  • Excellent communication skills

  • Compassion

  • Caring nature

  • Patience

  • A non-judgmental attitude

  • Dedication

This can be a difficult task. You are dealing with people who have an addiction problem. They may want to quit, but they feel like they can't. They may have setbacks. You have to continue on with your job without judgement and without resenting them. You will spend a lot of time with your patients, and you will have to build a strong rapport with them. They have to know that they can count on you to be there for them.

As a counselor in this field, your salary will vary, based on experience and the setting that you have chosen to work in. You can expect to make over 35,000.00 a year or more. In fact, if you counsel in substance abuse and mental health, you will make much more.

A career in this field can be very rewarding. It feels good to know that you are helping others and making a difference in the lives of not only the person that you are counseling, but those who care about the person. It's a nice feeling to know that you truly can make a huge difference in the life of someone who is suffering. If you are a kind, caring, compassionate person with a desire to do good, this could be the perfect career for you.
